Southgate to be awarded four-year deal

The Football Association are set to hand interim England manager Gareth Southgate a four-year deal until 2020 worth £1.5m-a-year, according to The Daily Telegraph.

Southgate, 46, was placed in caretaker charge following Sam Allardyce’s shock dismissal at the end of September and was given four matches to prove his credentials, which is set to end against Spain on Tuesday night.

The former England U21 manager has managed wins against Slovakia and Scotland either side a draw against Slovenia in his opening three matches, but the match against Spain will be his toughest examination.

However, it is now being reported that Southgate has already secured the full-time role and will be handed his four-year deal, which will see him through the 2018 World Cup and the next European Championships in 2020, regardless of the result at Wembley on Tuesday.

England are one of just two nations that have kept a clean sheet in each of their opening three World Cup qualifiers (Germany).
