Chelsea have left Diego Costa out of their 25-man squad for the Champions League group stages.
Costa failed to secure a summer move back to Atletico Madrid and has been included in Antonio Conte’s squad for the Premier League campaign.
The Brazilian-born Spain international is now expected to return to training but nothing has changed and he still has no future at Chelsea.
Atletico, who were drawn in Chelsea’s Champions League group, are hopeful of agreeing a deal for Costa by October but want the 28-year-old to return to London in order to regain his fitness.
Costa has been in Brazil all summer in a bid to force a move away from Stamford Bridge and even defied team instructions last month to return to England and make himself available for selection.
However, Costa isn’t expected to play for Chelsea again and certainly won’t feature for them in Europe after being left out of their Champions League squad.
Of players that have scored more than 15 goals in the last four Premier League campaigns, Costa has the best conversion rate (20.4%).
