Tottenham announce Mourinho as Pochettino replacement

Tottenham have this morning confirmed the appointment of Jose Mourinho as new head coach.

With the team sat in 14th, Spurs took the decision to relieve Mauricio Pochettino of his duties on Tuesday evening.

"The Club can today announce that Mauricio Pochettino and his coaching staff Jesus Perez, Miguel D’Agostino and Antoni Jimenez have been relieved of their duties," a statement read on the club's official website.

However, Spurs have wasted no time in bringing in the Argentine's successor, with Mourinho penning a three-and-a-half year contract in north London.

"We are delighted to announce the appointment of Jose Mourinho as Head Coach on a contract that runs until the end of the 2022/23 season," Spurs said in a statement on Wednesday morning.

Chairman Daniel Levy said of Mourinho's appointment: "In Jose we have one of the most successful managers in football.

"He has a wealth of experience, can inspire teams and is a great tactician. He has won honours at every club he has coached. We believe he will bring energy and belief to the dressing room."

Mourinho added: "I am excited to be joining a Club with such a great heritage and such passionate supporters. The quality in both the squad and the academy excites me. Working with these players is what has attracted me."

The former Chelsea and Manchester United manager will kick off his career as Spurs head coach with a trip to West Ham on Saturday afternoon.
