Barcelona defender out for the rest of the season

Barcelona have confirmed defender Aleix Vidal dislocated his ankle in their 6-0 win over Alaves on Saturday afternoon and will miss the remainder of the season.

Vidal, 27, was stretchered off with five minutes remaining of Barcelona’s thumping win at Mendizorrotza on Saturday and the club have confirmed he will be out for the next five months.

It comes as a huge blow for the former Sevilla right-back who has battled his way into contention under Luis Enrique in recent weeks having failed to make any impression on the Barcelona manager in his first 12 months of his time at the club.

The Spaniard had even moved ahead of academy graduate Sergi Roberto in the pecking order to fill in at right-back and looked to have finally got his Barcelona career on track before his horror injury ruled him out for the rest of the season.

Vidal has proven a valuable asset in the attacking third to Enrique’s men, having played a direct hand in five goals in his last seven matches from defence (two goals, three assists).
