Arsenal midfielder Cazorla on brink of joining new club

Santi Cazorla is edging closer to securing a sensational return to Villarreal ahead of next season, claims AS.

The Arsenal midfielder has been sidelined for the last 18 months due to a serious Achilles injury that has required more than 10 operations.

Cazorla’s current Arsenal deal is due to the expire at the end of the season and the 33-year-old is unlikely to be awarded a new contract now that Arsene Wenger has left.

Arsenal have missed Cazorla’s presence in midfield during that spell but now the former Spain international is on the cusp of finding a new club.

Cazorla came through Villarreal’s youth academy before leaving the Yellow Submarines for the second time in his career in 2011.

It has been confirmed that Cazorla will train with Villarreal during the summer and it has now emerged that he will be handed a one-year deal by the club if he comes through preseason unscathed.

Since August 2013, only Granit Xhaka (77.3) averages more passes per Premier League game for Arsenal than Cazorla (70).
