Manchester City are edging closer to making their first signing of the summer after progressing talks with Napoli for star midfielder Jorginho, claims The Times.
Pep Guardiola has made signing a new central midfielder a priority this summer and has identified Jorginho as his top target after flirting with the idea of getting Manchester United target Fred.
Jorginho is currently away on international duty with Italy but that finishes next week and City hope to complete a £42m transfer for the 26-year-old after that.
City have held productive talks with Napoli and Jorginho’s agent in the last few days and are confident of securing Jorginho’s services for less than Napoli’s original €55m asking price.
Jorginho is widely regarded as one of the best central midfielders in Europe after flourishing under Maurizio Sarri’s tutelage over the last two years.
In fact, Jorginho finished the season averaging more passes per game than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues (96.9).
