Everton manager Ronald Koeman says he is ‘very disappointed’ in Wayne Rooney’s recent behaviour but revealed he will play against Tottenham this weekend.
Rooney was arrested in the early hours of Friday morning for drink-driving and will appear in court on September 18 after being charged for the offence during the international break.
It has since been revealed that the 31-year-old was driving the vehicle that belonged to another woman, while he wife was out of the country on holiday, and Koeman has revealed the disciplinary hearing will be dealt with internally.
“Obviously I am very disappointed with the situation regarding Wayne Rooney,” The Daily Telegraph quote Koeman read from a prepared statement at Thursday’s press conference.
“We have spoken on Tuesday and the chairman Bill Kenwright also spoke to Wayne about the situation, and in line with any disciplinary matter it will be dealt internally by the club at the appropriate time.
“He will play this Saturday. If I see that Wayne is not in a physical or mental condition to play then he won’t play.”
The controversy comes as a huge slap in the face to Koeman, who reportedly outlined his expectations of Rooney to England’s record goalscorer before sanctioning his return to Goodison Park over the summer.
To make matters worse, Rooney appeared to have made a great start to life back at Everton and had just managed to stop fans and the media talking about his decline as a footballer.
In fact, Everton have only scored two goals in three Premier League games this season and both have been scored by the former England captain.
