Middlesbrough are interested in signing Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle after being quoted £15m for Nottingham Forest frontman Britt Assombalonga, reports The Sun.
New Boro boss Garry Monk is determined to bolster his offensive options this summer and the Championship outfit are currently battling Burnley for the Forest striker.
Monk is already plotting alternatives to Assombalonga and is considering a surprise move for Newcastle striker Gayle, who took the Championship by storm last season.
The 26-year-old endured an injury-hit finish to last season but was an integral part of a Newcastle side that won promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt.
However, Gayle isn’t considered a Premier League striker and will not be first choice next season under Rafa Benitez, paving the way for Boro to make their move.
Only Chris Wood (23) scored more clear-cut chances in the Championship (excluding play-offs) last season than Gayle (18).
