Premier League act to suspend fixtures until next month

The Premier League has confirmed that all fixtures will be suspended until April 3rd at the earliest.

The news comes after the league had confirmed on Thursday night that all fixtures would go ahead as planned this weekend.

Shortly after that statement, however, Arsenal announced that head Mikel Arteta had tested positive for Coronavirus.

Early on Friday morning, Chelsea confirmed that Callum Hudson-Odoi had come down with the virus earlier this week, but had recovered and was following guidelines to self-isolate.

However, Arsenal and Chelsea first team squads, and staff, have been self-isolating to minimise the risk of spreading Coronavirus. Everton and Bournemouth have since followed suit, with Cherries goalkeeper Artur Boruc among those who tested positive for Coronavirus.

"Premier League, FA, EFL and WSL have collectively agreed to postpone the professional game in England," a statement read on the Premier League's official website.

"Following a meeting of Shareholders today, it was unanimously decided to suspend the Premier League with the intention of returning on 4 April, subject to medical advice and conditions at the time."

On the announcement, Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters said:  "Above all, we wish Mikel Arteta and Callum Hudson-Odoi speedy recoveries, and everyone else affected by COVID-19.

"In this unprecedented situation, we are working closely with our clubs, Government, The FA and EFL and can reassure everyone the health and welfare of players, staff and supporters are our priority."
