Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is on the brink of securing an emotional return to Everton and a deal could even be announced by the end of this week, reports The Sun.
Rooney has been heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford this summer after dropping down the pecking order under Jose Mourinho last season and Everton manager Ronald Koeman has previously hinted at a move for the England captain.
The 31-year-old’s future remained unclear last week but there have been huge developments since and he will no longer be part of United’s squad that is due to fly to America for their pre-season tour on Sunday.
Rooney has previously been linked with a move to MLS or China but there have been no offers forthcoming from either country, while a return to Goodison Park has always been at the top of his list of priorities.
United shelled out £27m to sign Rooney from Everton in August 2004 when the England and United all-time record goalscorer was only 18 years old. Rooney will be allowed to return to Everton on a free transfer and Koeman’s side are willing to match his £250,000-a-week wages.
Rooney only started 15 Premier League matches last season and only came off the bench in the dying embers of their Europa League final win over Ajax in May. For Everton, it’s another huge statement of intent after going big in this transfer window already with the arrival of five new faces for more than £80m.
