Huddersfield poised to sign Bundesliga defender

Huddersfield are on the verge of signing Mainz defender Leon Balogun on a free transfer, reports The Sun.

Balogun’s current Mainz deal is due to expire at the end of the current campaign and the 29-year-old will not renew with the Bundesliga side.

The Nigeria international has only made 14 appearances in the Bundesliga this season and Huddersfield are close to securing his services.

David Wagner’s side are still battling to secure their top-flight status for next season and it remains to be seen whether Balogun would still join Huddersfield if they are relegated.

Balogun is involved in a relegation battle of his own, with Mainz only three points above the final relegation play-off spot.

Mainz pulled off a shock 3-0 win over RB Leipzig on Sunday to boost their chances of beating the drop, although Balogun was not fit enough to make the squad.

Of players that have made at least 10 Bundesliga starts this season, only Ignacio Camacho (6.5), Douglas Santos (6.1), Benjamin Stambouli (6.1) and William (5.7) average more tackles and interceptions combined per game than Balogun (5.6).
