Gomez announces he is to leave Besiktas

Mario Gomez has announced he will leave Besiktas this summer due to the political problems in Turkey.

The Germany international spent last season on loan at Besiktas and the Super Lig champions had been hopeful of completing a permanent deal this summer.

However, talks have now ended and Gomez will return to Fiorentina following the political unrest in Turkey.

“It was a difficult situation that I had to think about a lot,” Gomez revealed in a statement on his official Facebook page. “I have to tell you Besiktas fans personally that it is very heavy for me that I will not be playing for this great club in front of you wonderful fans in this unique stadium anymore.

“The reason is completely down to the political situation! There are no sporting or any other reasons that have made me make this decision. It is purely down to the terrible event that happened in the last few days.”

Gomez scored at least six more goals than any other player in the Super Lig after firing Besiktas to the league title last season (26).
