Moyes confirms Joao Mario is undergoing West Ham medical
David Moyes has confirmed reports Inter midfielder Joao Mario is undergoing his West Ham medical ahead of a proposed loan move.
The Hammers have been chasing Mario’s signature all month and are now on the brink of landing the Euro 2016 winner after making a breakthrough in talks with Inter on Wednesday.
West Ham are poised to pay €1.5m (£1.3m) to loan Mario for the remainder of the season and have an option to make the switch permanent for a further €35m (£30.6m).
Reports emerged on Thursday morning suggesting the 25-year-old had flown in to undergo his West Ham medical and put the finishing touches on the deal, which Moyes has now confirmed.
“Your sources are correct,” the London Evening Standard quote Moyes as saying on Thursday lunchtime. “It is a loan, we I’ll be able to tell you more once it’s done.”
Moyes has been desperate to strengthen his midfield options all month and the need to bring in new faces has only been heightened in the last week after losing Andy Carroll, Marko Arnautovic and Manuel Lanzini to injury.
Mario has failed to establish himself as a first-team regular for Inter ever since becoming the club’s second most expensive signing of all-time, starting just 27 of a possible 59 league matches.
Inter announced the arrival of Rafinha from Barcelona earlier this week, all but confirming he has no future at the club.
Of players that have featured in at least 500 minutes of Serie A action this season, only Gaston Ramirez (every 177.6 minutes) provides an assist more frequently than Mario (every 182.3 minutes).
