Guardiola expects Manchester City legend to extend stay

Pep Guardiola expects David Silva to extend his Manchester City contract as he feels the Spaniard has a huge role to play with upcoming talents like Phil Foden.

Silva has established himself as one of City’s best ever players in the seven-years he has spent at the club but his current deal is due to expire at the end of next season.

The 31-year-old has been on the receiving end of endless praise since Guardiola arrived at the Etihad more than 12 months ago and now the former Barcelona head coach is hopeful Silva will extend his £160,000-a-week contract.

“When he can finally sign the contract we’ll be so happy,” The Daily Mail quote Guardiola as saying. “What he’s done for the club will be written in history books. I hope he’ll continue.

“In the future, he won’t be able to play every three days but the club need players who have played here for a long time to help players like Phil Foden.

“He’s a real legend. He looks skinny and like he doesn’t run too much but he’s never injured and every three days he’s fit, he’s there.”

Silva, who will turn 32 in January, has been instrumental in City’s unbeaten start to the Premier League season. He has started all of 13 of their league matches and already registered more assists (8) than he did in 34 league appearances last term (7).

In fact, only Celta Vigo winger Pione Sisto has provided as many assists as Silva in Europe’s top five leagues this term.
