Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe admits he may have to look elsewhere for first-team football after reiterating that he didn’t join Sunderland to sit on the bench.
Defoe, 33, has played just 19 minutes in Sunderland’s last two matches and is growing frustrated by his lack of first-team action.
The former England international is sympathetic with what Sam Allardyce is trying to do at Sunderland, but still wants to play games.
“Obviously, I can understand the manager coming in and saying he’s not too sure if he wants to play 4-4-2. He might want to be more solid in midfield so you don’t concede goals, so we’ll just see what happens," Defoe told The Journal.
“But at the age of 33, you want to play football. I didn’t come here to sit on the bench. You want to play football and score goals. I said that from day one.
The former Spurs striker has scored two goals from seven appearances but has notably missed three big chances already this season. He has been linked with a January move to newly promoted Bournemouth.
