Dortmund player breaks hand in Bayern win

Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Burki has been ruled out for the remainder of 2016 after breaking his hand.

Burki, 26, sustained the injury during Dortmund’s 1-0 win over Bayern Munich on Saturday and will now undergo surgery, which will leave him sidelined for up to eight weeks.

“BVB goalkeeper Roman Burki broke his hand in the Bundesliga game against FC Bayern Munich (1:0) and will need an operation,” Dortmund said on their official website. “The operation will take place in the Knappschaft Hospital in Brackel and will mean he will be out for up to eight weeks.”

Dortmund still have seven matches to play before the winter break starts on 20 December, which means 36-year-old Roman Weidenfeller has a pivotal part to play for Thomas Tuchel’s side.

The Bundesliga giants still have to complete their Champions League group stage and top spot is set to be decided in their last match, when they travel to Real Madrid at the start of December.

Weidenfeller has featured in two German Cup matches this season, but his only game of real note was a league fixture against Ingolstadt at the end of October, which saw Dortmund concede 3 goals.
