West Ham summer arrival facing lengthy spell on the sidelines

West Ham have been dealt the cruel blow that summer arrival Andriy Yarmolenko will be sidelined for the rest of the season with an Achilles problem, reports the London Evening Standard. 

The Ukraine international landed awkwardly following a West Ham corner at the end of the first half in the Hammers’ 1-0 loss to Tottenham on Saturday. 

Yarmolenko went down in some pain and required treatment on the pitch before being stretchered off in the loss. 

It’s a repeat of a similar injury the 28-year-old sustained during his time with Borussia Dortmund and he is expected to be out of action for the best part of six months. 

Yarmolenko will now undergo surgery next week before starting rehabilitation, but his absence is a huge blow to the Hammers, with West Ham losing every Premier League match the summer arrival has not started this term. 

He’s the latest blow for Manuel Pellegrini to contend with, with the Chilean already without long-term absentee Carlos Sanchez, while fellow summer capture Jack Wilshere has suffered a setback in his recovery from an ankle problem. 

Yarmolenko has scored two league goals following his move to the London Stadium earlier in the year, both of which came in the 3-1 win at Everton last month.
