Man City boost attacking options with Argentine goal machine
Manchester City have confirmed they have struck a deal with Argentine champions River Plate for the signing of striker Julian Alvarez.
The 22-year-old was courted by some of Europe's powerhouse sides, but City have won the race to land the Argentina international.
Alvarez scored 18 goals and provided an additional six assists for River Plate last season to earn a better WhoScored rating (7.83) than any other player in the 2021 Liga Profesional campaign.
"Manchester City have completed the signing of Julian Alvarez from River Plate," a statement read on the club's official website.
"The 22-year-old forward, who has already collected five senior international caps with Argentina, has agreed a five-and-a-half-year deal."
On the deal, Director of Football Txiki Begiristain said: "Julian is a player we have monitored for some time. He is capable of operating in a number of attacking roles, and we firmly believe he's one of the best young attacking players in South America.
"I am so happy we have managed to bring him to Manchester City. I really believe we can provide him with the right conditions to fulfil his potential and become a top player."
City also confirmed that Alvarez will remain with River Plate until at least July 2022.
