Liverpool have performed a spectacular U-turn in their pursuit of highly rated Southampton centre-back Virgil van Dijk.
The Reds had been in pole position to secure the Dutchman’s services and it was thought that the Merseyside outfit would win the race to land the centre-back.
Southampton, though, threatened to lodge a complaint over Liverpool’s actions in their pursuit of Van Dijk.
Liverpool have since dropped their interest and apologised for any misunderstanding regarding the Netherlands international.
“Liverpool Football Club would like to put on record our regret over recent media speculation regarding Southampton Football Club and player transfers between the two clubs,” a statement reads on Liverpool’s official website.
“We apologise to the owner, board of directors and fans of Southampton for any misunderstanding regarding Virgil van Dijk.
“We respect Southampton's position and can confirm we have ended any interest in the player.”
Interest in Van Dijk, 25, remains high, however, with Chelsea and Manchester City now expected to return for the Saints star, who hasn’t played since January through injury.
Who do Southampton think they're fooling? We all know they'll sell eventually.
