Newcastle are weighing up a £10m offer for Lyon defender Samuel Umtiti if they stay up, according to The Chronicle Live.
The Magpies have already confirmed they will continue to invest in new players in the summer if Steve McClaren can ensure their Premier League status, with Umtiti among those they are tracking.
Newcastle spent nearly £25m in bringing midfielders Jonjo Shelvey, Andros Townsend, Henri Saivet and Seydou Doumbia on loan in January and their transfer policy has since come in for criticism after they failed to address their abject defence.
Umtiti, who is tipped for a France call-up in the near future, only signed a four-year deal last summer and was unavailable in January, but Lyon are reportedly willing to listen to offers at the end of the current season.
Since the start of the season, Umtiti has made at least 35 more clearances than any other Lyon teammate in Ligue 1 (97).
