Liverpool fear the worst over Oxlade-Chamberlain injury

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp fears Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain suffered a season-ending knee injury in their stunning 5-2 win over Roma on Tuesday.

Oxlade-Chamberlain suffered the injury attempting to tackle Roma’s Aleksandar Kolarov before being stretchered off and replaced by Georginio Wijnaldum in the 18th-minute.

The 24-year-old will undergo a scan on his knee but will certainly miss the return leg in Rome next week and now there are legitimate fears he will also miss the 2018 World Cup.

“Oxlade, it’s probably a really bad injury,” Klopp told BT Sport, via Liverpool’s official website.

“If we can say that already before the scan, that’s never good news so that means for us it’s a massive blow, of course.

“We have still a few very important games to go and the squad doesn't get bigger in the moment, so we obviously need to be creative in the next few games.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain missed Euro 2016 with a knee injury and a similar injury also ensured the versatile midfielder was unable to make a single appearance at the 2014 World Cup.

The Liverpool midfielder is enjoying the best football of his career and his absence would be a huge blow for club and country.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has played a direct hand in 10 Premier League goals in a single campaign for the first time in his career, achieving the feat in his first season at Liverpool.
