Mario Gotze hints at Liverpool move for Klopp reunion

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Mario Gotze has hinted at a possible reunion with Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool this summer.

Liverpool want to bolster their midfield options ahead of the new season and Gotze has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield in the past.

The Merseysiders were in talks to sign Lyon captain Nabil Fekir but the French side announced on Saturday they had terminated talks with Liverpool.

Klopp will now have to assess alternative targets and Gotze has refused to rule out a reunion with his former Dortmund head coach.

“I decided too leave Bayern and Jurgen Klopp was interested in getting me to Liverpool. And I was also interested in working with him again,” he told DAZN, via The Independent.

“[The desire to work with Klopp again] still exists. He is a world-class coach and that’s why it’s always an option. I decided to join Borussia Dortmund, but it was not a decision against Liverpool or Jurgen Klopp.”

Gotze was tipped for a huge future after scoring the winning goal for Germany in the 2014 World Cup final but his stock has dipped tremendously since then.

The 26-year-old was even left out of Germany’s 23-man World Cup squad this summer and his Dortmund future is uncertain following the appointment of new head coach Lucien Favre.

Gotze has only started 28 of a possible 48 Bundesliga matches since re-signing for Dortmund in 2016, garnering a less-than impressive WhoScored rating of 6.87 from those starts.
