Manchester United have opened contract talks with Phil Jones about securing his long-term future, reports ESPN.
Jones’ current deal is due to expire at the end of next season but United want to avoid letting the England international enter the final 12 months of his contract.
The 25-year-old has spent the last six years at United and injuries have stifled his progression at Old Trafford.
Jones appeared on his way out under at the start of Jose Mourinho’s tenure but the versatile defender has fought his way back into contention and is now a regular for the United manager.
The United No.4 was at arguably to blame for only two league goals United have conceded so far this season but he has otherwise enjoyed a sublime start to the campaign.
Jones is currently in the WhoScored Premier League Team of the Season (7.44) rating and has only misplaced 31 of 419 attempted passes in the league (92.6% success rate).
