Liverpool have opened talks with Arsenal over the possible signing of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, according to Sky Sports.
Chelsea were in pole position to sign the England international, but Oxlade-Chamberlain instead rejected the chance to move to the Premier League champions.
The 24-year-old is keen to play in central midfield rather than at wing-back, which is why Oxlade-Chamberlain rejected the Blues in favour of a move to Liverpool.
The Reds are now hoping to secure his services before Thursday’s deadline, with it believed Arsenal are demanding £35m for the player, the same amount Chelsea offered for the Gunners man.
Oxlade-Chamberlain has a little under 12 months left to run on his current contract at the Emirates Stadium and Arsenal are keen to sell this summer rather than lose him on a free next year.
Arsene Wenger had been keen on extending Oxlade-Chamberlain’s contract in north London, but once it became clear he wouldn’t pen a new deal, Arsenal opted to instead cash in on the player, with a move to Liverpool expected to go through before the close of the transfer window.
