According to the Manchester Evening News, Jose Mourinho is concerned that he will leave one of his key midfielders on a free next summer.
Marouane Fellaini was heavily linked with a move away in the transfer window but the Manchester United boss is known to be a keen admirer of the Belgian, who has drawn plenty of criticism since a move to Old Trafford.
Nevertheless, the former Everton man is a weapon that Mourinho looks to regularly and a valuable squad player given the intensity of the club's schedule.
Despite knowing that his manager would like him to stay on at the club, Fellaini is yet to agree terms on a new deal, with his current contract set to expire at the end of the season.
The current situation would mean that the Belgium international is free to discuss his future with other clubs in the New Year, which is something that Mourinho is keen to avoid.
Speaking to the press ahead of the match with Tottenham on Saturday, the United boss stated: "I’m worried about Fellaini and not about Luke Shaw," Mourinho explained. "Because Fellaini finishes his contract and Luke Shaw doesn't."
The 29-year-old was in strong form for the Red Devils prior to a knee injury sustained on international duty, making six Premier League appearances and scoring three goals for a WhoScored.com rating of 7.59.
