Southampton midfielder pens new long-term deal

Southampton have announced Oriol Romeu has agreed new terms on a fresh four-and-a-half-year deal keeping him at the club until 2021.

Romeu, 25, has spent the last two seasons at Southampton after joining from Chelsea in 2015 but has reserved his best form for this current campaign.

The former Barcelona academy graduate has been one of Southampton’s star performers this season and Claude Puel’s side have rewarded his form with an improved long-term deal.

“I couldn’t be any happier to have this new contract with the club,” Romeu told the club’s official website. “Ever since I came here I have felt very, very good. Everything has been positive for me. I have developed myself and been getting better every day.

“Looking forward, it’s a good thing for me, but hopefully there will be more to come and nice experiences to go through.”

The news comes as a timely boost for Southampton ahead of their EFL Cup semi-final second leg clash with Liverpool, against whom they hold a slender 1-0 advantage.

Romeu will need to turn in one of his best performances of the season to ensure Southampton can overcome Liverpool at Anfield, with star man Virgil Van Dijk ruled out for the match leaving the heart of Southampton’s defence in crisis.

In fact, Romeu has won possession in the midfield third more times than any other player in the Premier League this season (115).
