Englishman close to new United deal

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick is closing in on a new deal, according to ESPN.

Carrick, 34, has entered the final few weeks of his current deal and there had been no talks of an extension all season.

However, the England international was given a boost when Louis van Gaal was sacked and incoming manager Jose Mourinho looks to have given the club the green light to give the central midfielder another year at Old Trafford.

Carrick has struggled for form and fitness this season but that is also indicative of all players under Van Gaal this season and there is no doubt that he is still United’s best midfielder on his day.
