Newcastle smash club-record for Brazilian striker

Newcastle have announced the arrival of Hoffenheim striker Joelinton in a club-record deal worth a reported £35m.

Joelinton has put pen to paper on a six-year deal with Newcastle running until the summer of 2025.

The 22-year-old has spent the last five years at Hoffenheim though only returned to the club last summer following a two-season stint on loan with Rapid Wien.

Newcastle have now broken their club-transfer record for the second time in six months having failed to make a record buy in almost 14 years.

The Magpies made Miguel Almiron the most expensive player in the club’s history in January in a £21m deal and have gone even further to land Joelinton.

Newcastle supporters have endured a nightmare summer and will hope Joelinton can help lift their spirits.

Rafa Benitez left the club at the start of July and Newcastle appointed Steve Bruce in a widely unpopular appointment.

Newcastle also opted against making Salomon Rondon’s loan switch permanent despite a thoroughly impressive maiden campaign for the club last term.

Not only that, but Newcastle also sold star attacker Ayoze Perez to Leicester and are fending off interest from Manchester United in young midfielder Sean Longstaff.

Joelinton played a direct hand in 12 goals in 28 league appearances for Hoffenheim last season and gained a WhoScored rating of 7.21 in that period.

“I’m really happy to be here,” said Joelinton. “I know it’s a large investment that the club has made in me, and that comes with a huge responsibility.

“I’m highly motivated and hope to give back on the pitch.”

Head coach Steve Bruce added: “The kid’s got an exciting time ahead of him. He’s a smashing young player and we’re obviously delighted to get him. It’s been going on for a little bit now, so to get him is great for everybody.

“He’s got everything that a modern-day player wants. He’s big, strong and athletic, and of course he’s got age on his side too which is vitally important."
