Bayern Munich sack Carlo Ancelotti

Bayern Munich have announced they have sacked Carlo Ancelotti in the wake of their 3-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.

The Bundesliga giants held a crisis meeting on Thursday afternoon with Ancelotti’s future right at the top of the bill and they have decided to sack the Italian and put assistant manager Willy Sagnol in interim charge.

Sagnol, who spent nearly a decade as a player for Bayern, was made assistant manager over the summer and there is a real possibility he could take charge of the club until the end of the season when Bayern can then appoint a long-term manager.

There have been rumblings of unrest almost as soon as Ancelotti was appointed Pep Guardiola’s successor just over 12 months ago. While Ancelotti retained their league crown last season, Bayern didn’t even make the DFB Pokal final and were knocked out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage.

Bayern wanted to move away from Pep Guardiola’s intense management style, but even so, they were shocked at Ancelotti’s relaxed demeanour and even members of the squad were reportedly unimpressed with his training.

Ancelotti leaves Bayern three points adrift of Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga and facing a huge battle to finish top of their Champions League group following defeat to PSG. In fact, Bayern lost four of their last six away European matches under Ancelotti.
