Liverpool are prepared to battle Man City in the race to sign Joshua Kimmich from Bayern Munich, reports German publication Bild.

Kimmich's current Bayern deal runs until next summer and rumours of an imminent exit have been gathering pace.

Bayern are reluctant to lose Kimmich this month, however they are struggling to agree terms on a new deal with the German.

A move to City would see the Germany international reunite with Pep Guardiola but the defending champions won't have a free run at the 28-year-old with Liverpool also in the hunt for the midfielder.

Kimmich has started 14 league games for Bayern this season and is a key player for the Bavarian powerhouse.

However, both player and head coach Thomas Tuchel have a frosty relationship at the Allianz Arena, which could play a role in Kimmich departing.

Liverpool are in the midst of a midfield refresh following the high-profile departures of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, to name two.

While the Reds brought in four new central midfielders last summer, the addition of Kimmich would elevate Jurgen Klopp's side.

City could also maximise the addition of a player of Kimmich's ilk with injuries to the likes of John Stones and Mateo Kovacic impacting last season's treble winners.
