Manchester City identify Kompany replacement

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola wants to sign Leicester centre-back Harry Maguire to replace outgoing captain Vincent Kompany, claims The Daily Mail.

The Premier League champions announced on Sunday that Kompany will leave the club this summer when his current contract expires.

Kompany, who goes out as a domestic treble winner, will now take up a player manager role at former club Anderlecht.

Guardiola plans to use the summer to replace the 33-year-old and has earmarked Manchester United target Maguire as his top transfer target.

Leicester are determined to fend off City’s interest and it would require an astronomical fee to prise the England international away.

Guardiola has previously lavished praise on Maguire, though it remains to be seen whether he is willing to make the 26-year-old one of the club’s record buys.

Despite his hulking frame, Maguire has also demonstrated he is good with the ball at his feet, often carrying play forward and out of defence for the Foxes.

Maguire has played a direct hand in nine goals in the league since the beginning of last season, while the Leicester ace has completed more dribbles than any other centre-back in the Premier League in that time (67).
