Sunderland have announced Jermain Defoe has put pen to paper on a new three-year deal keeping him at the club until June 2019.
Defoe, 33, still had two years left to run on the four-year deal he signed when he joined from Toronto in 2014 but has been rewarded for his fine form last season that effectively sealed Sunderland’s safety in the Premier League.
The England striker’s form was so good that many thought he was unfortunate not to be selected in Roy Hodgson’s squad for the Euros this summer and Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce has hailed the frontman as one of the greatest goalscorers in Premier League history.
“Jermain is one of the greatest goal-scorers in the history of the Premier League and is a player that every manager would want to have in their team,” Allardyce told the club’s official website.
“He proved that beyond doubt last season by scoring 15 goals, he is in fantastic physical condition and we are very pleased that we have been able to extend his stay with us.”
Only Harry Kane (25) and Jamie Vardy (24) scored more goals of all England strikers in the Premier League last season than Defoe (15).
