Witsel to remain at Zenit

Belgium international Axel Witsel will remain at Zenit St. Petersburg beyond Tuesday’s transfer deadline after being told by the club he is not for sale.

Witsel, 27, has been extensively linked with a move to AC Milan and Tottenham this summer, but will have to refocus his attentions to the Russian Premier League after confirming he would be staying at the New Zenit Stadium.

“No, I will not leave anymore,” Witsel is quoted as saying in the The Daily Mirror. “The decision yesterday because in that short time they can’t find someone to play on my position.

“It’s a pity because I hoped to make a transfer.”

Of players to have made more than 30 appearances in the Russian Premier League only two players boost a higher pass completion than the Zenit ace (87.7%).
