Liverpool have announced Roberto Firmino has signed a bumper new five-year deal running until 2023.
Firmino had two years remaining on his previous £100,000-a-week deal but Liverpool have moved to secure the Brazilian’s long-term future.
Liverpool have struggled to keep their best players over the years, recently losing Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona in January.
Jurgen Klopp urged the club to secure Firmino’s long-term future at the start of March and now the 26-year-old has now agreed terms on a reported £180,000-a-week long-term deal.
“It was an easy decision,” he told Liverpool’s official website. “The club have taken me in in an incredible way and I’ve grown a lot here with my work with the support of the whole team. I am very, very happy here.
“Everything fits in the best possible way. My teammates are fantastic and I am very grateful to be able to play with them at this club.
“I love to play for Liverpool FC. The fans are excellent and fantastic in how they support us all the way. They support us throughout the games and the work they do during the match is beautiful.”
Firmino joined Liverpool during Brendan Rodgers’ time at the club but has flourished under Klopp, despite the criticism he doesn’t score enough goals.
However, it is the Brazil international’s work without the ball that makes him key for Liverpool and why supporters have taken to him so much.
Firmino has scored or assisted 38 goals in 46 appearances across league and European competition this season. In fact, only Cristiano Ronaldo (15) has scored more goals than Firmino (10) in the Champions League this season.
Furthermore, only Kevin De Bruyne (33) and Joshua King (28) have won possession in the attacking third more times than Firmino (27) in the Premier League this season.
