Tottenham beat Liverpool to rising Championship star

Tottenham have fended off competition from Premier League rivals Liverpool and are now in pole position to sign Fulham teenager Ryan Sessegnon, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Both Premier League clubs have been interested in signing Sessegnon all season after the teenage wonderkid enjoyed a thoroughly impressive breakthrough campaign with Championship side Fulham.

Jurgen Klopp is keen to sign a new left-back to provide James Milner with some competition after Alberto Moreno failed to make a significant impression on the Liverpool boss.

However, Klopp’s side have struggled to convince the 17-year-old to uproot from London to Merseyside and are now looking at alternative options with Tottenham set to land the highly rated England Under-19 international this summer.

Sessegnon made 28 appearances in the Championship this season and while he is predominately a left-back, he also showed an ability to play in advanced areas on the left hand side. In fact, only Tammy Abraham (23) scored more goals of teenagers in the Championship this season than the Fulham defender (5).
