Martial running out of chances under Mourinho

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has warned Anthony Martial he has to take his chances when they are presented to him.

Martial, 20, was left out of the matchday squad for United’s 4-0 win over Feyenoord on Thursday prompting further doubts over his future at Old Trafford under Mourinho.

United paid an initial £34m to sign the France international from Monaco in 2015 and the pacey winger was a revelation for the club under Louis van Gaal last season after the Red Devils were ridiculed for paying so much for a player that was relatively unknown.

However, Martial endured a nightmare Euro 2016 campaign with France and things have only got worse this season, with some inside the club worried that his off-field problems with his family are effecting his performances on the pitch.

Nevertheless, Mourinho has warned the Frenchman that he is running out of chances to impress and that he needs to start taking whatever chances he is given if he wants to turn his fortunes around at the club.

“The way the team played last season - and I’m not saying better or worse, just different - was probably more adapted to Anthony,” Sky Sports quote Mourinho as saying.

“Probably he was feeling more comfortable playing that way, at the intensity, at that rhythm of the ball possession and ball circulation. So probably he needs also some time.

“But in our squad, for these positions, we have Mkhitaryan, Jesse Lingard, Memphis Depay, Juan Mata, Marcus Rashford, Martial. These are probably the positions where we have more options. And, you have one opportunity, you have two, you have three - if you don’t bite, then somebody comes and takes the meat.

“They are friends, they are colleagues, they work together every day, but in the end they compete between themselves to have more chances to play.”

Despite only starting in five Premier League games this season, Martial has still scored more Premier League goals than any other United player since the start of last season (12).
