Liverpool open talks with Barcelona target

Liverpool have entered contract talks with Philippe Coutinho amid interest from Barcelona, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Coutinho’s current deal isn’t due to expire until 2020 but Liverpool are keen to reward their midfield maestro with improved terms to put an end to on-going talk of a big money move to Barcelona.

A number of Barcelona players have already welcomed the idea of the Brazil international joining the club but a contract renewal could put an end to their immediate interest in the 24-year-old.

Liverpool also have no interest in inserting a buy-out clause into Coutinho’s new deal in an attempt to keep their mercurial No.10 for the foreseeable future.

Coutinho has only just returned from ankle ligament damage sustained in November to provide Jurgen Klopp’s side with a major boost as they look to get their title challenge back on track.

The former Inter midfielder has scored five goals and registered a further five assists in 15 Premier League appearances this season, while only Roberto Firmino (7.67) has a higher rating for Klopp’s side (7.63).
