Bayern look to beat Madrid to Serie A defender

Bayern Munich have moved ahead of Real Madrid in the race to land Napoli left-back Faouzi Ghoulam, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, via AS.

Zinedine Zidane’s side have been looking to strengthen the left side of their defence since the end of last season and have reportedly earmarked the Napoli left-back as the ideal defender to add cover for Marcelo in that position.

Fabio Coentrao returned to the club in the summer and is currently being used as a temporary solution but is expected to move on at the end of the season, which is when Madrid will have the go ahead to sign a new left-back when their FIFA-imposed transfer ban is lifted.

However, Madrid could be beaten to the punch by European rivals Bayern, who are set to offer Ghoulam a four-year deal.

The 25-year-old, who is set for Africa Cup of Nations duty with Algeria next month, has entered the final 18 months of his current deal with Napoli and is also on the radar of Paris Saint-Germain.

Only Alex Sandro (34) has created more chances of all defenders in Serie A this season than the Napoli ace (24).
