Manchester United plot £50m bid for Arsenal star

Manchester United are positioning themselves at the front of the queue to sign Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in a deal worth £50m, claims The Sun.

Aubameyang will only have 12 months left to run on his current Arsenal deal this summer and the Gunners are increasingly resigned to losing their captain.

The former Borussia Dortmund striker only joined Arsenal at the start of 2018 and is already eyeing a move away from the Emirates.

Aubameyang turns 31 in the summer and is aware time is running out to win major honours and compete in the Champions League.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is desperate to keep Aubameyang but the club are not optimistic their captain will pen a new long-term deal.

To make matters worse for Arsenal, they may soon have to field offers from Premier League rivals United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to sign another striker at the end of the current campaign, whenever that might be, and Aubameyang is on the club's radar.

Odion Ighalo could yet have a say in that if he convinces United to make his loan switch from Shanghai Shenhua permanent at the end of the season.

The chance to sign a proven goalscorer of Aubameyang's calibre may be too good for United to turn down, however, though they should proceed with caution.

United have recently been burned by signing high profile names towards the end of their careers looking for one last big contract, most recently with Alexis Sanchez.

If Arsenal are forced into cashing in on Aubameyang then their preference would certainly be to sell abroad and Barcelona were interested in the striker in January.

Since moving to Arsenal from Dortmund in January 2018 in a deal worth a club-record £56m fee, only Mohamed Salah (51) has scored more goals than Aubameyang in the Premier League (49).
