Real Madrid respond to reports of world record bid for Neymar

Real Madrid have taken the unusual step to deny reports of a world record €310m (£275m) bid for Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar.

Neymar has been heavily linked with a move to Madrid ever since making the shock decision to leave Barcelona for PSG 12 months ago.

PSG are determined to hold onto Neymar’s long-term services but reports of a move to Madrid refuse to go away.

It was claimed by Spanish television station TVE the European champions had tabled a blockbuster move for the 26-year-old but Julen Lopetegui’s side have poured cold water over the speculation.

“The information issued tonight by TVE is outright false,” a statement read on Real Madrid’s official website.

“Real Madrid has not made any kind of offer to PSG or the player. Real Madrid is surprised that Spanish public television has been able to broadcast absolutely false information without anyone contacting any of the parties to contrast the alleged information that could have easily have been denied.”

Madrid’s decision to publically refute speculation in the press has raised eyebrows, as TVE are not the first media outlet to report the club’s interest in Neymar.

The 26-year-old is currently away with Brazil at the 2018 World Cup and has played a direct hand in three goals in four appearances for the South American giants (two goals, one assist).
