Fabregas keen on extending Chelsea stay

Cesc Fabregas is keen to sign a new deal at Chelsea and prolong his stay at Stamford Bridge.

The Spaniard’s contract expires next summer and the ball is firmly in Chelsea’s court over whether they opt to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge.

Fabregas has admitted he is enjoying life under Maurizio Sarri, even though he has dropped down the pecking order in the Chelsea midfield after missing the start of the season with a knee injury.

“I’m very open about it (extending his contract),” Fabregas is quoted as saying by the Guardian.

“To be the honest the club has not said anything. At the end of the day I have eight months left and at the moment I’m gone. But I’d love to stay at the club.

“I’ve been very happy for the last four years and a half. We’ve had great success, won many things. I think I have a good understanding with the fans and players. I feel I still have a lot of football left in me but it is now up to the club.”

Chelsea have a policy of only offering one-year contract extensions to players over 30 and, at 31 years of age, the same is expected for Fabregas, if they do opt to offer him a new deal.

He’ll hope he can extend his deal with Chelsea, with Fabregas admitting he is impressed with Sarri’s attacking philosophy, adding: “I wish he came a bit earlier to be honest. It’s a little bit late now in my career.”

Fabregas started, and impressed in, the 1-0 win over Vidi on Thursday night, but he is expected to make way for Jorginho in midfield for the meeting with Southampton on Sunday.
