Barcelona have announced Marc-Andre Ter Stegen has signed a new long-term deal keeping him at the club until 2022.
Ter Stegen, 25, had two years left to run on his previous contract but was keen to extend his stay at the Camp Nou despite being subject to heavy interest from Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City last summer.
Ernesto Valverde’s side have also looked to ensure no club can prize their No.1 goalkeeper away from the club in the coming years after including a mouthwatering €180m (£156m) release clause in his new contract
“FC Barcelona have reached an agreement with the player Marc-Andre Ter Stegen to extend and improve his contract until 30 June 2022,” a statement read on Barcelona’s official website. “His buyout clause now stands at €180m, and his new contract will be signed on Tuesday.”
Ter Stegen, who joined Barcelona from Gladbach for €12m (£10.4m) in 2014, spent the first two years at the club as Claudio Bravo’s understudy and only featured in the Champions League and Copa del Rey.
However, City’s interest in both goalkeepers forced Barcelona to part ways with Bravo last summer and promote the Germany international in all competitions and he has arguably been the best goalkeeper in La Liga this season as a result.
In fact, of goalkeepers that have made more than 10 appearances in La Liga this season, Ter Stegen has the best save success rate (79.2%).
