Barcelona are weighing up a shock move for Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic at the end of the season, according to Mundo Deportivo.
Robert Fernandez, the club’s technical director, is determined to land a new central midfielder this summer and has identified Paris Saint-Germain star Marco Verratti as Barcelona’s top transfer target.
However, Barcelona are aware of the complexity a deal to sign Verratti involves and have wisely drawn up a list of alternatives, which reportedly feature Matic despite the fact he is a completely different type of midfielder to the Italian.
Matic has enjoyed a fine season alongside N’Golo Kante in Chelsea’s midfield this season, this coming after the fact his future at the club was in doubt at the end of last season after dropping down the pecking order.
In the last three Premier League campaigns only four players have completed more tackles than Matic (255).
