Italian World Cup winner not thinking about retirement

Veteran striker Luca Toni insists he is not thinking about his future and is fully focused on helping Verona avoid relegation this season.

Verona are currently rock bottom of Serie A and eight points adrift of safety having failed to win any of their 17 league games this season.

Toni, 38, has only featured in nine league matches this season after missing two months of the campaign through injury, but has still managed to score 25% (3) of Verona’s goals this season (12).

The Italy World Cup winner is widely expected to retire at the end of the season but the former Fiorentina striker insists he still hasn’t made a decision on his future and wants to focus on lifting Verona out of the bottom three.

“Everyone says I signed on to become a director of Verona, but the truth is I am still a football player and I haven’t decided yet whether I’ll retire in June or in 2017,” Toni told Tuttosport.

“I’ve been supposed to quit for the last four years and I’ll make a decision in the spring. A lot will depend on how the season goes and how I’m feeling, so whether I want to keep challenging myself all over again."

Despite his age, no player scored more goals in Serie A last season than Toni (22).
