Liverpool defender Joe Gomez will miss the remainder of the season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury on international duty.
Gomez, 18, was forced off late on during England U21s’ 3-0 win over Kazakhstan on Tuesday.
England U21 boss Gareth Southgate had initially played down the severity of the injury, but new Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is likely to be without the promising teenager until the start of next season at the very earliest.
Gomez, who joined Liverpool from Charlton over the summer, had made a promising start to life in the Premier League having started in each of Liverpool’s opening five league matches.
