Bayern star to extend his deal to 2021

Manchester City are set to be dealt a blow in their pursuit of David Alaba, with the versatile defender on the verge of signing a new five-year deal with Bayern Munich, reports Bild, via 101 Great Goals.

Alaba is the latest in a long line of Bayern players to have been linked with a move to City with Pep Guardiola at the end of the season as the incoming manager looks to revamp the current squad at the Etihad Stadium.

The Austria international has developed into an integral part of the set-up at Bayern since Guardiola’s arrival in 2013 and is set to be rewarded with a €5m (£3.8m) annual pay rise when he pens his new long-term deal keeping him at the Allianz Arena until 2021.

The 23-year-old has often proved the glue that has kept the Bayern defence together at times this season as the other defenders have been blighted by reoccurring injuries throughout the campaign.

In fact, only Robert Lewandowski (2,049 mins) and Thomas Muller (1,955 mins) have played in more minutes in the league for Bayern this season than Alaba (1,897 mins), who has proved he can also play in midfield as well as across the back four. Added to that, only Xabi Alonso (91.2) is averaging more passes per game in the Bundesliga than Alaba (84.7).
