Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has earmarked Gladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka as his No.1 priority for the summer transfer window, according to Bild.
Xhaka, 23, has already revealed it is his dream to move to the Premier League and he has previously been linked with a move to Arsenal.
However, Liverpool now appear the front runners to land the Switzerland International after it has emerged Klopp met with the midfielder’s agent, Andy Gross, in December to discuss a potential deal.
The former Basel midfielder still has four years left to run on his current deal at Gladbach, which means it could require a sizeable fee for Klopp to land his man.
Xhaka’s particular strength comes from his ability to pick a long range pass. In fact, only two outfielders average more long balls per game than Xhaka (8.2) across Europe’s top five leagues this season. However, discipline has proven a problem for the midfielder, who has picked up the most red cards in Europe this season (3).
