Tottenham defender wants to be highest earner

Toby Alderweireld has told Tottenham he wants to be made one of the highest earners at the club alongside Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris, claims the London Evening Standard.

The Belgium international’s current deal is not due to expire until 2019 and there is an agreement that would entitle the defender to a further 12 months, but Tottenham want to agree fresh terms that would take out a current clause that would allow Alderweireld to leave for £25m in the summer of 2019.

Alderweireld, 28, has established himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League since swapping Southampton for Tottenham in 2015 and he would not be short of suitors should he become available for transfer.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side understandably have no interest in letting the Belgian leave the club and want to make Alderweireld the latest Tottenham star to commit their long-term future to the club, although that could require handing him wages in the region of £100,000-a-week.

Alderweireld proved his was human after all during Tottenham’s 2-1 win over Southampton at the weekend after making the first error that has directly led to an opposition goal in his Premier League career.
