Mourinho could strip Rooney of Manchester United captaincy
Wayne Rooney is facing the prospect of being stripped as Manchester United captain if he elects to stay at the club next season, reports The Sun.
The 32-year-old, who is out of contract next summer, is free to leave United this summer but is yet to receive a formal offer as his future remains up in the air.
Rooney dropped down the pecking order under Mourinho last season and doesn’t feature in the manager’s long-term plans with new players in his position set to arrive.
Calls for Ander Herrera to be made captain next season got louder towards the end of the last campaign and now Rooney is facing the prospect of complete demotion as Mourinho ponders his next skipper.
Despite only making 25 appearances in the league last season only Herrera (6) and Anthony Martial (6) provided more assists for United than Rooney (5).
