Inter keen on Manchester United outcast

Inter want to make Nemanja Matic their third signing from Manchester United this season when the January transfer window opens, claims The Daily Telegraph.

Matic, who is into his third season at United, has fallen completely out of favour at the club over the last 12 months since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer replaced Jose Mourinho as manager.

Inter boss Antonio Conte was in charge of Chelsea when Matic was sold to United but wants to reunite with the Serbia international in Italy.

It was Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich that sanctioned Matic’s departure in 2017 and not Conte, who has already prised Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku from United this season.

Matic will be allowed to leave United if the Red Devils can sign at least one central midfielder in January and Inter are at the front of the queue for the 31-year-old.

Conte has already lamented a lack of squad depth at Inter this season and was left without his first-choice midfield for their final Champions League group game away to Barcelona last week.

Inter had to win to stay in the competition but the Serie A giants ended up losing 2-1 at home to a weakened Barcelona side.

Fred and Scott McTominay have emerged as United’s first-choice midfield this season to limit Matic to just three Premier League appearances.

Since August 2017, only Ashley Young (240) has made more tackles and interceptions combined than Matic (222) of all United players in the Premier League.
